Kata Légrády (* 1974 in Barcs ) is a Hungarian opera singer , conductor and artist .

life and work

As a young student, Kata Légrády studied opera singing and composition at the Academy of Music and Fine Arts of the University in Pécs and acting at the Gór Nagy Mária Drama School in Budapest, worked in numerous musical and television productions, but then decided on a career as visual artist .

Her artistic work was influenced by her later mentor Prof. Daniel Spoerri , co-founder of the Nouveau Réalisme artist group and inventor of Eat-Art , the German artist and art theorist Prof. Bazon Brock and the artists Jacques Villeglé, Raymond Hains and Philippe Pasqua , whom she got to know while studying in New York, Oxford and Paris.

In her sculptures, photographs, drawings and video installations, the artist deals with the tension between violence, power and consumption, playing with handguns, hand grenades or aerial bombs with colorful smarties , elements of Disney characters, fur and feathers, or even combined with banknotes, decorated or painted with shrill candy colors. A disturbing tension arises between childhood and destruction, between violence, suffering and the memory of children's games. "Your fetish objects are a further development of surrealist object art in the age of high-gloss aesthetics."

With them, Kata Légrády wants to intervene in public discourses on global conflicts and crises. In line with this maxim, Légrády's alienated war equipment was juxtaposed in a special exhibition in 2014 on the occasion of the beginning of the First World War 100 years ago with the warning reflections of war by artist colleague Käthe Kollwitz in the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin . Légrády's objects were intended to update Käthe Kollwitz's pacifist demands. The newspaper Die Welt praised this museum venture as “one of the most interesting and worth seeing exhibitions” of this commemorative year and as a “curatorial achievement” by the curators Gudrun Frisch and Pay Matthis Karstens.

Kata Légrády is the widow of the entrepreneur and art collector Jan A. Ahlers . She lives and works in Hanover , Paris , Kampen and Budapest .
