Katharina Haan (* unknown; † January 24, 1628 in Bamberg ) was a victim of the witch hunt .

Family and witch trial

Katharina Haan came from Mergentheim and was the wife of Georg Haan , Chancellor of the Bamberg prince-bishop Johann Georg II. Fuchs von Dornheim , whose family belonged to the nobles in Bamberg. Katharina Haan was denounced as a witch by the witch commissioner in Hochstift, Georg Harsee , who wanted to succeed Georg Haan in office. She was arrested and interrogated under torture . She confessed that the devil had seduced her in the form of a hunter. She revoked this confession at the next interrogation. However, the doctors examining them found a birthmark (" witch's mark ") and were certain that they were looking at a real witch. Under the torture, she also accused her eldest son, Adam Haan . The councilors and aldermen of the city of Bamberg sentenced them to death by burning on January 19, 1628 . The sentence by execution by the sword was changed by a pardon from the prince-bishop and carried out on January 24th.

Her husband, her eldest daughter Katharina Röhm and her daughter Ursula Maria Haan were executed from those around Katharina Haan . The son Adam and his wife also died after being tortured by execution.
