Eduard Michelis

Eduard Michelis , pseudonym Odilo , (born February 6, 1813 in St. Mauritz , † June 8, 1855 in Luxembourg ) was a German Catholic theologian.

Life

Eduard Michelis was born in St. Mauritz as the son of a copper engraver and drawing teacher , he is the brother of Friedrich Michelis . From October 1826 he attended the Paulinum high school and studied philosophy and theology at the Münster Academy from 1832 to 1835 . After entering the episcopal seminary in 1835, he was ordained a priest on May 27, 1836 at the age of 23. In the same year he became the private and secret secretary of Clemens August von Droste-Vischering , the archbishop of Cologne. On November 20, 1837, he and his bishop were arrested as part of the Cologne turmoil . He first came to the Minden Fortress and later to the Magdeburg Citadel on the island of Werder , where he was imprisoned until April 1840. He was then "banished" to Erfurt, where he lived with the cathedral priest for a long time. After his release in 1841 he returned to St. Mauritz. In the following year he founded the Sisters of Divine Providence , who were initially responsible for an orphanage that still exists today. Together with Wilhelm Junkmann he founded the Munster Sunday newspaper . From 1844 until his death he worked as a professor of dogmatics at the seminary in Luxembourg . He was a co-founder of the Luxemburger Wort newspaper .
