Katharina von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (* 1488 ; † June 29, 1563 in Neuhaus ) from the House of Welfs was a princess of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and, by marriage, Duchess of Saxony-Lauenburg .

Life

Katharina was a daughter of Duke Heinrich I of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1463-1514) from his marriage to Katharina (1465-1526), daughter of Duke Erich II of Pomerania .

She married Duke Magnus I of Saxony-Lauenburg (1470–1543) on November 20, 1509 in Wolfenbüttel . To furnish the bride, her father convened the state parliament in 1509 to collect a miss tax, as he found himself unable to pay the dowry on his own. Only after long negotiations did the state parliament grant three land estates for marriage money and the princess's treasures.

Katharina was considered a strict Catholic with close ties to her Braunschweig relatives, which induced Gustav I of Sweden to dissuade the German Catholic princes from supporting King Christian II of Denmark by marrying her daughter .

When her eldest son married, she entered into negotiations with his later mother-in-law Katharina , which took place without the knowledge and to the detriment of the Wettin head of the family, Johann Friedrich .
