Sibylle of Saxony (born May 2, 1515 in Freiberg , † July 18, 1592 in Buxtehude ) was a Saxon princess from the Albertine line of the Wettins and by marriage Duchess of Saxony-Lauenburg .

Life

Sibylle was the oldest child of Duke Heinrich of Saxony (1473–1541) from his marriage to Katharina (1487–1561), daughter of Duke Magnus II of Mecklenburg .

She married Duke Franz I of Saxony-Lauenburg (1510–1581) in Dresden on February 8, 1540 . This connection was important for Sibylle's brother Moritz in the Schmalkaldic War . The marriage turned out to be unhappy and Franz accused Sibylle of vengeful and unrewarding acts . In later years, Sibylle and Franz were reconciled. In 1552 Sibylle asked her brother Moritz for financial help so that her husband could redeem some of Lübeck's estates and villages .

The Duchess played a prominent role in 1588 during the affair of her son Moritz with the middle-class Mrs. Tschammer, against whom she brought a witch trial . Sibylle was buried in Ratzeburg Cathedral.
