Catherine of Cordona

Catherine of Cordona or Cardona (* 1519 in Barcelona ; † May 11, 1577 in La Roda ) was a Spanish noblewoman from the old Catalan family Cardona.

Life

Cordona was the illegitimate daughter of the Spanish general Ramón Folch de Cardona in Naples . In 1557 he returned to the court of Philip II in Spain . She probably did not grow up with her father in Naples, but came to a Capuchin monastery, from where she was married at the age of 13. However, her husband soon died, so she returned to the monastery. Cordona became governess and educator of Don Carlos and Don Juan de Austria after her father returned . In 1562 she fled the palace and retired to a cave near La Roda, where she lived as a hermit . As people soon made pilgrimages to this place, she decided to found a Carmelite monastery there. She was of Migne settled the term "blessed" because it depends on the hl. Theresa was regarded as a great saint and was invoked by the people in various emergencies.

Cordona exerted great influence on the “ Convent of the Discalced Carmelite Sisters” founded in Pastrana in 1559 , which attracted countless candidates for the order and thus advanced to become one of the most important novitiate . In 1571 , John of the Cross tried in vain to alleviate the rigorous climate that prevailed there . Also in La Roda there was a convent from 1572, which was under their influence.

Her admirers included St. Theresa also Pedro de Alcántara .
