Katharine Whitehorn

Katharine Elizabeth Whitehorn CBE (born March 2, 1928 in Hendon , London Borough of Barnet , † January 8, 2021 ) was a British journalist and writer .

Life

Whitehorn attended Roedean School , a private school in Brighton , and later moved to Glasgow High School for Girls . At Newnham College of Cambridge University , she completed her studies.

1956 was Whitehorn co-editor of a women's magazine when she the photographer of Picture Post , Bert Hardy (1913-1995), met. He hired her as a model and through his photos she became known very quickly. In 1958 she married in Marlborough ( county Wilshire ) the writer Gavin Lyall and had with him two sons.

She later started writing for Picture Post as well. When their publication was discontinued in 1957, she got a job as a columnist with the Observer and wrote there until 1996. At the same time, the University of St Andrews ( County Fife ) entrusted her with teaching positions. From 1982 to 1985 she was the rector of this university.

From 1997, drew Whitehorn for the monthly column in Saga Magazine responsible and from 2009 she hosted every Friday the philosophical mission of the Points of View on Radio 4 of the BBC .
