The third church was destroyed by fire in 1875 and a temporary fourth church was built a few blocks away while the fifth and current church was built. The fifth church was consecrated in 1877 by Joseph Sadoc Alemany y Conill , Archbishop of San Francisco , while construction continued. The present portico was completed in 1884 and the large dome completed in 1885. It offers space for 950 visitors.

In 1981 a major renovation project began in the church that was to become the cathedral of the new Roman Catholic Bishop of San José. In 1985 the church was elevated to a cathedral. The cathedral was declared a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997 .
