The Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter (English: St Peter's Cathedral Basilica ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Kumasi , Ghana . It is the seat of the Archbishop of Kumasi and has the title of a minor basilica .

prehistory

After the first baptisms of three residents in Kumasi on June 11, 1905, a school was built in 1908 and then a mission house was built in 1910 by the first local priest Alfred Laurent SMA from France , on which today's cathedral was built. At Christmas 1913, the first service was celebrated in what was then St. Peter's Church. In 1916 a separate parish was set up with Pastor Joseph Muller SMA.

Church building

The construction of today's Peterskirche began under Victor Burg SMA, the laying of the foundation stone in March 1929 blessed Bishop Ernest Hauger . The building was completed in 1931, so that the opening and the blessing of St. Peter's Church could take place on December 1, 1931 under Pastor Joseph Vogel SMA. The twin towers were completed in 1934. St. Peter's Church was solemnly consecrated on January 21, 1940 by Archbishop Antonio Riberi , the Apostolic Delegate of East and West Africa.

During the construction, the Apostolic Vicariate of Kumasi was built in 1932, which was elevated to a diocese with St. Peter as a cathedral on April 10, 1950. On May 9, 1980, Pope John Paul II visited Kumasi and celebrated the Holy Eucharist in the Baba Yara Stadium . In 2002 the Apostolic Nuncio in Ghana, George Kocherry , announced the elevation of the Church of Kumasi to the status of metropolitan seat with the suffragan bishops Goaso , Konongo-Mampong , Obuasi and Sunyani . The St. Peter Cathedral was on June 29, 2004 by Pope Benedict XVI. raised to a minor basilica .
