The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception ( Spanish Catedral Basílica de la Inmaculada Concepción ) is a Roman Catholic church in Mongomo in eastern Equatorial Guinea . It is the cathedral of the Mongomo diocese with the additional title of a minor basilica . It is consecrated with the patronage Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Mother Mary , the patron saint of Equatorial Guinea.

history

The foundation stone of the church was laid by the President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo , in his home region of Wele-Nzas . It was built in the historicizing style by the Italian company Makinen Venture in six years on behalf of the government and equipped by the Italian company Ruffini Decorazioni. On the plan of a Latin cross , it offers space for 800 visitors. At the ends of the transepts there is a side altar and on the other side a baptismal font. At the end of the choir there is an apse with the main altar. The 39 m high dome towers over the crossing and is crowned by a lantern. The basilica is the second largest Roman Catholic church in Africa after Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix de Yamoussoukro . In front of the portal there is a colonnaded forecourt.

Cardinal Archbishop Francis Arinze consecrated the church on November 7, 2011 in the presence of five cardinals, 45 bishops and around 300 priests as well as important politicians. It was also given the title of a minor basilica . A replica of the Esperanza Macarena from Seville by the artist José Antonio Bravo is venerated in the church.

With the creation of the Mongomo diocese, the church was elevated to its cathedral in 2017.
