The Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains ( St. Peter in Chains Cathedral ) in Cincinnati in the US state of Ohio is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati . It was built in the classicist style between 1841 and 1845 .

history

The Catholic faith was brought to Cincinnati primarily by German and Irish immigrants. The city became a bishopric in 1821 and a metropolitan seat in 1850. The initiator of the cathedral construction with the patronage of Peter in chains was John Baptist Purcell , Bishop and Archbishop of Cincinnati 1833-1883. He consecrated the church on November 2, 1845. In 1957, the cathedral was expanded to the west and received the large-scale altar wall mosaic. The church was raised to the rank of minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2020 .

architecture

The Petrus Cathedral is originally a rectangular three-aisled hall church with a slightly raised central nave. The two transept arms were added during the expansion in 1957. All ceilings are coffered . Corinthian columns separate the ships. A gableless portico with twelve Corinthian columns is presented to the portal . He carries the tower, which consists of six octagonal, tapered storeys and a narrow cone point. The main architectural model was St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London.

Furnishing

The cathedral has a lecture cross with a body of Christ by Benvenuto Cellini . The portal is made of solid bronze, the stations of the cross are mosaic pictures . The dominant feature is the wall-filling mosaic on the back wall of the chancel. It was created in 1957 by the German church artist Anton Wendling and shows Christ as Pantocrator , who hands Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven ( Matthew 16:19  EU ), flanked by the smaller scenes of Peter's two captives in Jerusalem ( Acts 12 : 1–17  EU ) and with Paul in the Mamertine dungeon in Rome.
