The Cathedral of Saint-Brieuc or the Cathedral Basilica of St. Stefan ( French Basilique-Cathédrale Saint-Etienne de Saint-Brieuc ) is a Catholic church in Saint-Brieuc in Brittany , France . The cathedral of the eponymous diocese is dedicated to St. Stefanus and was built with the title of a minor basilica . The building, completed in the 15th century, has been a historical monument since October 30, 1906. It is one of the nine historic cathedrals in Brittany.

history

Construction began around 1180 in a swamp on wooden pillars under Bishop Geffroy de Hénon and the building was well advanced when Bishop Pierre was buried at the foot of the Brieuc Tower in 1212. Pierre had brought the relics from Saint-Brieuc to the city of Angers in October 1210 . Work on the west facade of the building continued under Bishop Guillaume Pinchon , from his arrival in 1220 until his exile in Poitiers in 1228, after Pinchon's conflict with Pierre Mauclerc. When he returned in 1231, a chapel was built on the south side of the building, dedicated to St. Mathurin. His wish was to be buried in the chapel, which happened in 1234. The work was completed by Pinchon's successor Philippe before his departure for the Holy Land in 1248.

More than a hundred years later, the cathedral suffered great damage from the English during the destructive war for Breton Succession and then a fire in late 1353. The cathedral was completed in the early 15th century and construction began between 1460 and 1472 by Bishop John Prigent the Annunciation Chapel. The rose window of the nave dates back to 1728.

Many important restorations and works were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries, including repairs to the vault and work on the stained-glass windows. In 1875 the church was given by Pope Pius IX. awarded the title of a minor basilica.

Building

The cathedral has the character of a fortress church on the outside and this function also fulfilled during some sieges. The central portico is flanked by two sturdy towers: the 28 m high Brieuc tower from the 14th century and the 33 m high Marie tower from the 15th century, both equipped with loopholes. The interior is designed as a basilica on a cross-shaped floor plan. The length of the cathedral is 74 meters with seven bays in the nave and two bays in the choir , the width in the transept 40 meters. The vaults reach 10 meters high. The choir is a handling surrounded by original seven chapels.

organ

The organ was built in 1848 by the organ builder Cavaillé-Coll. The instrument has 40 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The 2nd manual on the console serves as a coupling manual.
