The Cathedral of San Benedetto del Tronto , named Santa Maria della Marina, is located in the coastal town of San Benedetto del Tronto in the south of the Italian region of Marche . The cathedral of the diocese of San Benedetto del Tronto-Ripatransone-Montalto is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and also has the title of a minor basilica .

History and description

According to plans by the Bolognese architect Gaetano Ferri, construction work began in 1847. The plans underwent various interventions during the long construction period. The church was blessed and opened to the public in 1908, although the work was still ongoing. After the war, the external stairs and the facade were completed. The building was inaugurated on February 11, 1973.

With the creation of the merged diocese of San Benedetto del Tronto-Ripatransone-Montalto, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1986. On July 5, 2001, Pope John Paul II also awarded the cathedral the title of a minor basilica, as the relics of the city's patrons, Saints Urbica and Illuminato, are kept in it. The earthquake in central Italy in 2016 damaged the cathedral so much that it was no longer allowed to be entered. During the renovation work from May onwards, the vaults, the corridors and some side altars were restored.

Building

The travertine facade rises above a stone staircase in the neo-renaissance style . Three doors lead into the three-aisled church. The central nave is covered by a barrel vault . The apse was decorated by the Franciscan artist Father Ugolino da Belluno with a lively fresco of 400 square meters, which decorates the maritime traditions of the city along with the representation of local saints. In the apse there is also an 18th century painting depicting a Virgin and Child. The statue of the Madonna was created by Giuliano Pulcini from Carrara marble and placed in the upper niche of the facade after the earthquake.

The organ is in the last section of the right aisle in an elevated position. The instrument was built in 1948–1950 by Balbiani Vegezzi-Bossi for the Basilica of the Holy House in Loreto as an extension of an instrument by Carlo Vegezzi Bossi from 1902, which in turn used parts of a Callido opus 391 organ from 1802. The organ was installed in the cathedral in 1992. Its 51 registers are played via three manuals and a pedal.
