Originally dedicated to St. Martin von Tours (later also the Virgin Mary = Notre Dame ) consecrated cathedral of Tulle is the episcopal church of Pope John XXII, who resided in Avignon in 1317 . founded Diocese of Tulle . It has been recognized as a monument historique since 1862 .

location

Tulle Cathedral is located on the west bank of the Corrèze River at an altitude of about 325  m .

history

The cathedral emerged from a monastery founded in the 7th century, the church of which was destroyed by the Normans in 846 and rebuilt in the second half of the 9th century. In the 11th century the abbey prospered, so that in 1103 a new building was started, but its completion until the 14th / 15th. Century lasted. During the French Revolution , the Church served the cult of the Supreme Being . In 1796 the crossing dome collapsed and damaged parts of the choir and transept ; these parts were separated by a wall. In 1805 the church was returned to the Catholic cult. In the 19th century, the damaged parts were rebuilt and the church and its cloister were thoroughly restored.

architecture

church

From the Romanesque abbey church of the 12th century, the archivolt portal , which concludes in an inner multi-pass arch , and the chapter house of the cloister (cloître) have been preserved. The three-aisled interior of the essentially Gothic church has a basilica structure, with the rib-vaulted central nave only having two floors ; the side aisles are groin vaulted . Almost all the windows in the church have no tracery . The apse has a square plan.

Bell tower

The ground floor of the approx. 75 m high bell tower (clocher) also dates from the 12th century. The three upper floors and the closed pointed helmet accompanied by four small lantern towers - as the different window fillings suggest - were built successively in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Cloister

The two-storey cloister, now used as a museum, also goes back to the abbey, although it was later used by the canons . The chapter house is impressive with its two square eight-part pillars and its zigzag ornamented central vault.

Furnishing

The cathedral's furnishings include numerous sacred objects as well as paintings and statues (see note 1).

The organ was built in 1975 by the organ builder Haerpfer & Erman with 44 registers on three manual works and a pedal.
