The Catholic Church in Flims Waldhaus

The Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Flims is a Roman Catholic church in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . It has been in the Waldhaus part of the village since 1937 .

The development of the Catholic parish in Flims

Until the arrival of the Reformation in 1528, Martinskirche, which dates back to 831, was the Catholic church in Flims. After the people of Flims had completely converted to the new faith, there was no longer any de facto Catholic parish in the mountain farming village until tourism began around 1870 . From this point onwards, due to the economic situation, an increasing number of Catholics settled in Flims, for which the pastor of Laax was responsible.

In 1920, with around 100 Catholics in the village, there was a desire for a church of their own. In 1925 the pastor of Laax, Michel Anton Alig, introduced a regular Sunday service, first in the benefice house by the village church. Once the altar had been removed and thrown into a ravine, they looked for a room of their own and found it in Villa Badus in Flims Waldhaus.

Also in 1925 the diocesan cultus association Chur bought a meadow of 2000 m 2 for 6,500 francs on the Cresta site. In the following years, until 1934, the main initiator, Pastor Martin Gartmann from Laax, completed the collection of money for the construction of the church. It raised 60,000 francs, and in the winter of 1934, Bishop Laurenz Matthias Vincenz von Chur gave permission to begin construction. The architect PA Furger from Lucerne was responsible for the plans, while J. Ulrich Coray from Ilanz was responsible for the execution from May 18, 1934. The foundation stone was laid on June 30, 1934. On May 3, 1936, the church was blessed by Vicar General Christian Caminada .

On October 24th, 1937, the first pastor from the Württemberg region held the first service in the new church. Kaufler died of pneumonia after only one year in office. It was not until 1962 that the first confirmations were given by Bishop Johannes Vonderach ; these were the first confirmations in Flims since the Reformation and the first confirmation in St. Joseph's Church.

The altars followed in 1939, on May 8, 1965 the bells, which were tuned to the ringing of the Martinskirche in the village, were raised, followed by today's leaded glass windows in 1971 and the first organ in 1979 . In 1995 the new rectory and meeting center building was completed, and a youth room was added in 2006.

A heater was procured in 1951; the Norge hot air oil furnace cost 920 francs at the time. A total renovation in 1989 also included the installation of a new organ.
