The Roman Catholic parish church of Laa an der Thaya is located on the Kirchenplatz in the town of Laa an der Thaya in Lower Austria . The parish church of St. Veit is part of the Laa-Gaubitsch deanery in the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church is a listed building and is one of the largest late Romanesque church buildings in Lower Austria.

Building history

The construction of the church in the form of a late Romanesque - early Gothic pillar basilica began around 1240 and was initially completed in the third quarter of the 13th century. Its floor plan has a typical Romanesque structure in the form of a Latin cross. The nave without a tower is 51 meters long and the transept 26.5 meters wide. It was not until 1400 that the 52 meter high tower was added to the west facade. From 1700 the main portal and interior were redesigned in the Baroque style.

The exact measurement of the Romanesque building showed a kink in the axis , whereby the axes of the choir and the nave are possibly based on the sunrise on Easter Sunday and Palm Sunday in 1207. This is interpreted as an intention (reference to Holy Week ).

Furnishing

The baroque high altar by the sculptor Ignaz Lengelacher was consecrated in 1745. It depicts the martyrdom of St. Vitus in a three-dimensional representation, accompanied by two larger than life figures of his foster parents. Above the altar is the coat of arms of the founder Joseph Anton Schiffer von Schifferstern .

The same donor commissioned the baroque pulpit built in 1756 by the sculptor Paul Oswald . Only three of his former four putti depicting the holy evangelists have survived . Three relief pictures with biblical scenes complete the work.

The organ with rich acanthus cut work is a work by Christoph Pürner from the year 1728. In 1978 a new work with 25 registers was built into the existing case by the Upper Austrian organ builder Bruno Riedl .
