Katra is a small town ( Municipal Committee ) in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It is located in the district of Reasi , 15 km southeast of the district capital Reasi and 30 km north of Jammu . In the 2011 census, the population was 9008. The city of Katra is located in a narrow area between the Siwaliks in the south and the Pir Panjal in the north. The city is at an altitude of 850 m . A railway line runs east from Katra to the city of Udhampur .
The Vaishno Devi temple complex is located in the mountains not far from the city.
