Udhampur is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the south of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 35,507, with suburbs 84,015.
The city was named after Raja Udham Singh , the eldest son of Udham Singh who founded the Dogra rule. The city of Udhampur is located in a basin landscape between Pir Panjal in the north and the Siwaliks in the south at an altitude of 743 m . The Ravi River flows east past the city in a southerly direction. The National Highway 1A runs through the city and connects the city km southwest to the 35 Jammu and the northern valley of the River Chenab . Udhampur is on the Jammu to Katra railway line .
The North Command of the Indian Army is in Udhampur. The Mian Bagh Airforce Station is also located on the southeastern outskirts of the city .
