Katzenjammer Kauderwelsch is a German documentary film by Martina Fluck from 2019 . It deals with the life story of the brothers Rudolph and Gus Dirks, who became pioneers of the genre with their comics The Katzenjammer Kids and Latest News from Bugville .

content

The director Martina Fluck and the comic artist Tim Eckhorst go in search of traces of the important sons of their town Heide in Schleswig-Holstein, Rudolph and Gus Dirks, who emigrated to Chicago with their family in 1884. The Dirks took with them the tradition of picture stories of Wilhelm Busch and invented speech balloons, onomatopoeic letter sequences and lines of movement and thus became co-founders of modern comics. Fluck and Eckhorst meet famous comic artists such as the 91-year-old Hy Eisman and discover the artists' colony Ogunquit in Maine, where Rudolph had his summer residence until his death in 1968. Descendants of the Dirks provide a possible explanation as to why Gus Dirks voluntarily passed away 66 years before his older brother Rudolph.

The documentary, shot in the style of a road movie, combines real shots with passages drawn by Tim Eckhorst, some of which are created directly in front of the camera.
