Kayra Sayit

Kayra Sayit (born February 13, 1988 in Fort-de-France as Ketty Mathé ) has been a Turkish judoka since 2015 , who previously competed for France . She was the European heavyweight champion in 2016.

Athletic career

The 1.65 m tall Ketty Mathé was U20 European champion and U20 vice world champion in the heavyweight division in the weight category over 78 kilograms in 2006 . In 2007 she was again U20 European champion and won the European team championship with the French team. In 2008 she was French champion and second in the team world championships. After a two-year break, she returned to the mat in 2011 and was defeated by the Slovenian Lucija Polavder in the quarter-finals of the 2011 European Championships in Istanbul . In the hope round she won against the German Franziska Konitz and lost to the Russian Tea Dongusashvili , in the end she finished fifth. In autumn 2011 she won the World Cup tournament in Rome. In 2012 she was once again runner-up in the European team championships with the French team.

She married in Turkey in February 2015 and took Turkish citizenship and the name Kayra Sayit. Her first success was in 2015 when she won the Grand Prix tournament in Budapest. At the 2016 European Championships in Kazan, she defeated the French Émilie Andéol in the quarter-finals and the Lithuanian Santa Pakenytė in the semi-finals . With her final victory over the Ukrainian Switlana Jarjomka she was European champion. At the 2016 Olympic Games , she lost in the quarter-finals to the Chinese Yu Song . In the hope round she won against the Tunisian Nihel Cheikh Rouhoun and lost against the Japanese Kanae Yamabe , in the end she finished fifth. At the end of 2016 she won the Turkish national championship.

At the 2017 European Championships in Warsaw, she defeated German Carolin Weiß in the quarter-finals and lost to Switlana Jarjomka in the semifinals. In the fight for a bronze medal, she was defeated by Larisa Cerić from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Four months later, at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, she defeated Émilie Andéol in the quarter-finals, but then lost to Sarah Asahina from Japan in the semi-finals . In the battle for a bronze medal, she lost to the South Korean Kim Min-jung . In 2018 Kayra Sayit took seventh place at the European Championships . In June she won the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona. At the 2018 World Championships in Baku, she lost to Sarah Asahina in the quarterfinals. Sayit secured a bronze medal with victories over Irina Kindzerska from Azerbaijan and Maria Suelen Altheman from Brazil. A year later at the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo, she defeated Sarah Asahina in the quarterfinals, but then lost to the second Japanese Akira Sone in the semifinals . She won the battle for bronze against the Brazilian Beatriz Souza .
