Keeril Makan

Keeril Makan (* 1972 in New Jersey ) is an American composer and music teacher.

The son of South African-Indian and Russian-Jewish immigrants studied composition at Oberlin College after completing his violin training . He continued his composition studies at the University of California, Berkeley . He also studied for a year as a Fulbright scholar at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and as a recipient of the George Ladd Prix de Paris at the University of California for two years in Paris. He teaches as a professor of music at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

Makan received u. a. Commissions from the ensemble for new music Bang on a Can All-Stars , the American Composers Orchestra , the Harvard Musical Association and Carnegie Hall . His works have been performed by ensembles and musicians such as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center , the International Contemporary Ensemble , the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin , the Argento Chamber Ensemble , the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne , the Sonar Quartet , the Del Sol Quartet , the Ensemble Nuova Consonanza , performed by the New Juilliard Ensemble , percussionist David Shively , guitarist Seth Josel, and pianists Bruce Levingston and Ivan Ilić .

In addition to prizes from the American Academy of Arts and Letters , the Fromm Foundation , the Gerbode Foundation , the Hewlett Foundation , Meet the Composer , the Aaron Copland House , the Utah Arts Festival and the ASCAP , Makan received the Luciano Berio Rome Prize of the American Academy in 2008 Rome . Under the title In Sound , a CD with works by Makan was released by the Kronos Quartet and the Paul Dresher Ensemble , and another with recordings by the Either / Or ensemble , the California EAR Unit and the soprano Laurie Rubin was released under the title Target .
