Keith Declan Fahey (born January 15, 1983 in Dublin ) is an Irish football player who currently plays for the English club Birmingham City and the Irish national team. Fahey can be used as a midfielder or winger . Standard situations are his particular strength .

Career

Fahey played for Irish football club Cherry Orchard in his youth until he joined Arsenal in 1998 and Aston Villa two years later . There he could not assert himself. Contrary to rumors to the contrary, he said he did not play a game for the professional team from Villa. He was also homesick , so he went back to Ireland in 2003. There he played a few games for the amateur club Bluebell United before Eamonn Collins brought him to St Patrick's Athletic . After a probationary period, Fahey signed a professional contract there and was regularly used in the League of Ireland .

In 2005 Fahey moved to Drogheda United , an Irish club that was financially generous and had high athletic goals. However, he did not get along with the coach Paul Doolin , behaved in his opinion unprofessional and was eventually fired. He then returned to St Patrick's Athletic. There he was again a regular player in the league and was used in 2007 and 2008 in qualifying and in 2008 in the first round of the UEFA Cup. In the same year he was named Ireland's Footballer of the Year .

In January 2009 he moved to Birmingham City in the English second division. On January 17, he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City for Birmingham. Although he is right-footed and was originally scheduled as a central midfielder, he was used on the left wing. Birmingham rose to the Premier League in 2009 , where Fahey kept his regular place. After the club relegated back to the Football League Championship in 2011 , Barry Ferguson and Lee Bowyer left the club. In the following season Fahey was mainly used in the central midfield.

National team

Fahey took part in the 2003 Junior World Championship as a member of the Irish national youth team.

In 2010 Giovanni Trapattoni used him for the first time in the senior national team . Since then he has been a regular member of the national team. Fahey was also appointed to the squad for the 2012 European Championship , but could not participate due to a groin injury. Paul Green was nominated for him .
