Keith James Holyoak (born January 16, 1950 in Langley , British Columbia ) is a Canadian-American cognitive psychologist and poet.

Life

Holyoak was born in Langley, Canada in 1950. He first studied at the University of British Columbia , where he received his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1971, and then continued his studies at Stanford University . There he received his doctorate in 1976 with Gordon Bower.

That same year he became a faculty member at the University of Michigan and stayed there until 1986 when he moved to the University of California, Los Angeles , where he held a position as Distinguished Professor of Psychology.

In 1994 and 1995, Holyoak chaired the governing body of the Cognitive Science Society . From 1995 to 1999 he was an editor for the journal Cognitive Psychology .

Holyoak is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the Association for Psychological Science , the Cognitive Science Society, and the Society of Experimental Psychologists .

Scientific work

Holyoak conducts research in the field of cognitive psychology and cognitive science. His work focuses on the role of analogies in thinking. His research has shown how analogies can be used to improve the learning of new, abstract concepts in both children and adults. In further work, Holyoak examined the effects of brain damage on the ability to reason.

poetry

In addition to his scientific work, Holyoak devotes himself to literary translation as well as his own poetry and is an important representative of the form-conscious poetry of the New Formalism . Holyoak published his own poems in the anthology My Minotaur . He also published the anthology Facing the Moon with transcriptions from Chinese - poems by Li Bai and Du Fu .
