Ken Middleham

Kenneth Lee Middleham (born May 12, 1927 in Riverside , California , † May 23, 2001 ) was an American cameraman who specialized in slow-motion / time-lapse photography of insects, birds and plants.

Life

Until 1945 he attended Polly High School in Riverside, in 1949 he graduated from Riverside City College with a degree in bacteriology . Until 1952 he studied photography at the Art Center School of Photography in Los Angeles . Until 1972 he was head of the photography department at the University of California at Riverside. He then went into business for himself as a freelance cameraman. Even before 1972 he was involved in various documentaries for National Geographic , such as B. 1966 at The Hidden World of Insects . He got to know producer David L. Wolper through National Geographic , and in 1971 they collaborated on the Oscar-winning documentary The Hellstrom Chronicle . In 1974 he directed the insect sequences in Saul Bass ' Phase IV . He quit Hollywood and the advertising industry in the late 1970s and retired to his home on Two Trees Road in Riverside. There in the basement he built his own studio and devoted himself to the special photography of insects, birds and plants from his vicinity. Among other things, he used several robotic cameras he had designed himself to take time-lapse recordings. Ken Middleham died of skin cancer on May 23, 2001 .
