Kenji Ekuan

Kenji Ekuan ( Japanese 榮 久 庵 憲 司 , Ekuan Kenji ; born September 11, 1929 in Tokyo Prefecture ; † February 8, 2015 ibid) was a Japanese industrial designer.

Life

Ekuan was born in Tokyo and grew up in Hawaii . He lived in Hiroshima during World War II and lost his sister and father after the atomic bomb was dropped . He then wanted to become a monk like his father , but later studied in Tokyo and Pasadena (California) and graduated from Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku in 1955 . In 1957 he founded the design studio GK Industrial Design Associates, of which he remained chairman until his death.

Ekuan's most famous design was created in 1961 and is the bottle that is still used today for Kikkoman soy sauce .

In 2003 he received the Lucky Strike Designer Award , the most highly endowed European designer award .
