Kenneth Bi (* 4. March 1967 in Hong Kong as Bi Guo-Zhi ) is a writer, director and actor in Canada and Hong Kong. He participated in numerous theater and film productions.

biography

Kenneth Bi is the son of actors Ivy Ling Po and Chin Han, who became famous in Hong Kong through the Shaw Brothers Studio . Both starred in numerous Hong Kong films and had a brief appearance in Kenneth Bis's debut film Rice Rhapsody .

Kenneth Bi studied theater and film at Brock University in Canada. He graduated with the academic degree "Honors".

Career

In 1992 he received a “Special Merit” award in Toronto for his CBC radio play “Rice Krinkles”.

The Canadian director and producer Teddy Robin brought Bi with his many talents as an actor, writer and editor into the team of his film Hong Kong Graffiti in 1995 and gave him his first chance on the big screen. In 1998, BI co-produced the film Slow Fade by debutant Daniel Chan and enabled him to participate in the 1999 Berlinale . In the same year, he received a nomination for Best Original Score for The Longest Summer by Fruit at the Hong Kong Film Awards Chan , who also ran in the 1999 Berlinale competition.

Besides film work, Bi took a break in 2001 to write eight short stories for children published by WWF . Under the title Lolo's Big Adventures , Bi tells the story of the migration of a young black-fronted spoonbill and addresses children of preschool age to teach them about the conservation of endangered animal species.

In 2002, Bi turned back to film and took on the assistant director, a supporting role and wrote the story for the film The Runaway Pistol . The film was very popular with critics in Hong Kong and premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival . He received nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay at the 39th Golden Horse Awards.

For Rice Rhapsody , Kenneth Bi shot for the first time on 35mm film material. The film was shown in cinemas in Hong Kong , Taiwan and Singapore . The screenplay for the film, written by Kenneth Bi, was awarded the 1999 Best Screenplay Award by the Taiwan Government Information Office. It was selected as a funding project for the PPP 2000 by the Pusan ​​Promotional Plan, an organization that mediates sponsors and co-producers for extraordinary projects in the Asian film market. The stars of the film are Sylvia Chang , Martin Yan , Maggie Q and Mélanie Laurent .

In October 2004 Rice Rhapsody had its premiere at the largest Asian festival, the Pusan ​​International Film Festival . In the same month he was selected for the competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival 2004. At the 2004 Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, Rice Rhapsody was nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Score. The second film directed by Bis, The Chinese Drummer's Journey , premiered in Hong Kong on October 11, 2007. In addition to the main actors Jaycee Chan and Anjelica Lee , Tony Leung Ka-Fai , Roy Cheung , Josie Ho , Kenneth Tsang , Eugenia Yuan as well as the internationally known Zen drum group U-Theater are involved. The Chinese drummer's journey was featured in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival . This makes it the first competition film from the Hong Kong and Taiwan region at the renowned festival.

The Chinese drummer's journey wasco-producedby the German production company Twenty Twenty Vision and the German composer Andre Matthias is responsible for the film music.
