The Journey of the Chinese Drummer (Original title: The Drummer ) is a Hong Kong film by writer and director Kenneth Bi . This is the director's second film.

Sid is the son of a Hong Kong underworld legend. So he gets away with all his insolence in the underworld until he unfortunately seduces the girlfriend of a gang boss. The rebellious young man is now fleeing his involvement in criminal machinations in the lonely hills of Taiwan. There he joins a group of Zen musicians and finds the long-awaited inner peace.

The film celebrated its world premiere on August 9, 2007 at the 60th Locarno Film Festival . The Hong Kong premiere was on October 11, 2007. The Drummer was featured in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival . This makes it the first competition film from the Hong Kong and Taiwan region at the renowned festival.

The Drummer was co-produced by the German production company Twenty Twenty Vision . The German composer Andre Matthias is responsible for the film music.

When the director Kenneth Bi saw U-Theater, a twelve-person drum group from Taiwan, in 2000, he felt inspired to make this film.
