Kenneth Irwin Kellermann (born July 1, 1937 in New York City ) is an American astronomer who works in the field of radio astronomy .

Life

Kellermann studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) until 1959 and received his Ph.D. in physics and astronomy at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) with a thesis on spectra of galactic and extragalactic radio sources. He then worked for two years at the CSIRO Radiophysics Laboratory in Sydney . Since June 1965 he has been at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville , Virginia , interrupted by some longer stays at scientific institutions in other countries. From 1977 to 1979 he was director at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn. Since 1985 he has been Research Professor of Astronomy at the University of Virginia .

Kellermann made important contributions to the understanding of radio galaxies and quasars and to modern cosmology. Together with other astronomers, he was one of the pioneers of Very Long Baseline Interferometry in the late 1960s . His constant commitment to the project finally led to the inauguration of the Very Long Baseline Array in 1993 .

Kellermann received numerous awards, including the 1971 Helen B. Warner Prize of the American Astronomical Society . In 2014 he was awarded the Catherine Wolfe Bruce Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific . He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1975 and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1976 . In 1997 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .

In 1999 he was admitted to the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN) as a foreign member . He is an External Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and a member of the International Astronomical Union .
