Kenneth Dover

Sir Kenneth James Dover FRSE FBA (born March 11, 1920 in London , † March 7, 2010 in St. Andrews ) was a British Graecist .

Kenneth Dover attended St Paul's School and then went to Balliol College , Oxford . During the Second World War he served in the British artillery. After the war he returned to Oxford and obtained a second degree. He became Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at St Andrews University in Scotland in 1955 . In 1975 Dover was elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh , knighted in 1977 for his services as a university lecturer . From 1978 to 1981 he chaired the British Academy , of which he had been a member since 1966. In 1979 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He left Scotland in 1976 to become President of Corpus Christi College , Oxford. He was succeeded by Ian G. Kidd . Dover was Chancellor of the University of St. Andrews from 1981 until his retirement in December 2005. Kenneth Dover died on March 7, 2010, shortly before the age of 90.

Dover was married to Audrey Latimer (* 1920 - December 2009) since 1947. The couple had a son and a daughter.

Dover has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Oxford , St. Andrews, Birmingham , Bristol , London , Durham , Liverpool and Oglethorpe.
