Kensington is a small town in Prince County in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island . The place has 1496 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Kensington is in the northwest of Prince Edward Island. Summerside is ten kilometers to the southwest. The connecting roads Prince Edward Island Route 2 , Prince Edward Island Route 6 , Prince Edward Island Route 20 , Prince Edward Island Route 101 and Prince Edward Island Route 109 meet in the center of Kensington or end there. The place was therefore previously known as the Five Lanes End .
history
The first settlers in the area of Five Lanes End used the place as a hub and trading center for the surrounding villages. After a wealthy settler opened an inn there, the place was renamed Barrett's Cross in his honor in 1824 . As early as 1862, the company was renamed to its current name based on the Kensington Palace in London . After the Prince Edward Island Railway opened a station in town, the city was officially founded. In 1983 the station was closed again, then used temporarily as a museum and now houses a restaurant. Historic Kensington Railway Station was listed on Prince Edward Island 's National Historic Sites of Canada .
