The Kern-Buam was an Austrian folk music group from Gradenberg in the municipality of Köflach in Styria . It was founded at the end of the 1940s and existed with changing line-up until the 2000s.

The beginnings

The music group was founded at the end of the 1940s by the conductor and music teacher Adolf Kern and his sons Sepp , Hubert and Erich Kern. Another member of the music group was cousin Hans Mitterhumer. The hallmark of the group was the Styrian hat with a feather, which the members wore during their performances.

Their breakthrough came with the piece of music Der Steirische Custom , with which they launched the Styrian radio talent competition Show what you can in 1954 . won. In 1956 the first record was published.

In 1957 father Adolf had to leave the group due to illness and was replaced by Willi Fabian. Adolf Kern died in 1961. In the same year the Kern-Buam decided to become professional musicians. For this reason, Willi Fabian left the group. Fritz Pignitter became the new trombonist. In 1963 Hermann Rumpf took over from Hans Mitterhumer. For almost thirty years the line-up remained the same and songs like Die Goaß is weg , I lieg 'im Straßengrab'n , Das Steirische Dengllied , or Der Trosaunenkönig were created. In the 1960s, the humorist Fritz Edtmeier was a frequent companion of the Kern Buam.

In the ORF , there was first the folk music show "Today 'spiel'n the core Buam to" even the first Musikantenstadl they were there.

In 1992 Willi Fabian joined the group as the sixth man. In 1995 Erich Kern left the group and was replaced by Peter Schlatzer. On September 10, 2000, the Kernbuam Museum was opened in a historic West Styrian house at the Schneiderwirt in Voitsberg. In 2003 Adolf Schriebl joined the group as a replacement for Hubert Kern. In 2004 Fritz Pignitter left the group due to illness and was replaced by Alois Sidar, who also played in the Original Ligister Trio . The Kern-Buam celebrated their last anniversary in 2007: 60 years of Kern-Buam .

One of the goals of the Schneiderwirt Trio group, which was founded in 2008 , is to “continue the music of the Kern-Buam”. The founding members are Gottfried Pignitter (born March 25, 1971; son of Fritz Pignitter senior; vocals, accordion), Markus-Erich Kern (born January 16, 1979; grandson of Erich Kern; vocals, guitar, clarinet) and Manfred Pignitter ( * August 12, 1980; nephew of Fritz Pignitter senior; vocals, double bass, trombone).

Sepp Kern

Josef Kern was born on December 30, 1933 in Köflach in Gradental. In 1948 he founded the Kern-Buam with his father and brothers, of which he was a singer and clarinetist. After Adolf Kern died, he took over the band. When Kern contracted serious heart disease in the spring of 2009, the group was announced to be dissolved. He died on the evening of June 30, 2010.

Hubert Kern

Hubert Kern was born in Köflach in 1935. He co-founded the group and played bass. He died on September 27, 2003 and was replaced by Adolf Schriebl.

Erich Kern

Erich Kern was born in 1923 as the first son of Kapellmeister Adolf Kern. After being a prisoner of war, he joined the group as a trumpeter. He had to leave the band due to illness in 1995 and was replaced by Peter Schlatzer. He died on January 27, 2001.

Hans Mitterhumer

Johann Mitterhumer was born in 1930 as the nephew of the conductor Adolf Kern. He was also a founding member of the group, was its accordionist, left it in 1963 and was replaced by Hermann Rumpf.

Adolf Kern

The Kapellmeister Adolf Kern was born in 1900. In 1948 he founded the Kern-Buam with his sons Sepp, Hubert and Erich, as well as with his nephew Hans Mitterhumer. He played the trombone and died in 1961.

Fritz Pignitter Sr.

Fritz Pignitter was born in Voitsberg in 1940. In 1961 he joined the group as the youngest member. The Kern-Buam gave him the name Trumpet King . From 1992, when Willi Fabian joined the group, he played the guitar in addition to the trombone. In 2000 he and his son opened the Kern-Buam-Museum at the Schneiderwirt in Voitsberg. In 2004 Fritz Pignitter had to end his musical career due to illness. He died on August 20, 2009.

Fritz Edtmeier

Fritz Edtmeier was born on October 25, 1925 in Gmunden and worked as a humorist all his life. From 1961 he worked together with the Kern-Buam. In 1980 he suffered a stroke and a heart attack and retired into private life. He died on November 26, 1982.

Hermann Rumpf

Hermann Rumpf was born in 1940 and replaced Hans Mitterhumer on the accordion in 1963. He was engaged with the band until the breakup. At Sepp Kern's funeral service on July 7, 2010, he played the harmonica in front of the coffin. He died on December 16, 2019.

Hias Mayer

Erich Mathias Mayer was born on November 3, 1950 in Johnsbach. He was known in the 1980s as the "primitive cattle of the nation". He also worked occasionally with the Kern Buam. On July 7, 2007, Hias shot himself in his house in Donnersbach.

Willi Fabian

Wilhelm Fabian was born in 1933. He joined the group in 1992 and made the Kern Buam a sextet .

Peter Schlatzer

Peter Schlatzer was born in 1941 and hired to replace Erich Kern in 1995.

Adolf Schriebl

Adolf Schriebl was born in 1933. He was a long-time member of the Gradnertal Trio . After Hubert Kern's death, Adolf Schriebl was brought into the band as the new bass player in 2003.
Awards: Gold Medal of Merit of the Republic of Austria, Gold Medal of Honor of the State of Styria, Medal of Honor in Gold of the State Capital Graz, Gold Medal of Honor of the City of Köflach, Great Honor of the native community of Graden.

Alois Sidar

Luis Sidar was born in 1933. He was a long-time member of the Ligister Trio , which also often stood on stage with Hias. In 2004 he replaced Fritz Pignitter, but only played guitar.
