Cernavodă ( Romanian Centrala Nucleară de la Cernavodă ) near Cernavodă is the only nuclear power plant in Romania . Five power plant blocks were originally planned, of which blocks 1 and 2 are in operation. The reactors installed there are Canadian CANDU reactors , which use heavy water as a moderator . The water of the Danube or the directly adjacent Danube-Black Sea Canal is used as cooling water .
history
The nuclear power plant was planned in the early 1980s. After a construction period of 14 years, the first block was completed in 1996, the second after a 25-year construction period in 2007. Both blocks each have an output of 705.6 megawatts . The nuclear power plant provides about a fifth of the country's electricity.
The construction of reactors 3, 4 and 5 was canceled.
In March 2008, the Romanian Atomic Energy Agency commissioned a consortium of six international corporations to finish building reactors 3 and 4 for an estimated 2.3 billion euros. Consorts were the Italian electricity company Enel , the German RWE (via its subsidiary RWE Power ), Electrabel (Belgium), Iberdrola (Spain), CEZ (Czech Republic) and ArcelorMittal Romania.
In January 2011, RWE , GDF Suez , which had meanwhile taken over Electrabel, and Iberdrola announced that they would no longer pursue the Cernavoda project due to economic and market-related uncertainties.
According to the IAEA, the completion of Unit 5 was finally rejected on March 11, 2014.
In 2015, Nuclearelectrica and the China General Nuclear Power Group signed a letter of intent to develop reactors 3 and 4 for an estimated 6.5 billion euros. In January 2020, Prime Minister Ludovic Orban announced his intention to terminate the agreement with the China General Nuclear Power Group.
The name of the power station and the city is derived from the Bulgarian черна вода (tscherna voda) , which means "black water".
