Information board in the Biodiversum about the nuclear power plant planned at the time

The Remerschen nuclear power plant with an output of 1,300 megawatts with a pressurized water reactor was planned in 1973 and should go into operation in 1981, but was ultimately not implemented. It would have been the first nuclear power plant in Luxembourg . It was already in competition with the implemented Cattenom nuclear power plant in the planning phase (construction by Électricité de France , EdF, in the municipality of Cattenom , France ).

The Luxembourg project was also supported by the German government, the prime ministers from Saarland ( Franz-Josef Röder ) and Rhineland-Palatinate ( Helmut Kohl ), and should cost around 1.5 billion German marks , with at least 50% of the electrical energy generated should be delivered to Germany.

history

On March 25, 1957, Luxembourg signed the Treaty of the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) together with five other European countries . Luxembourg has also been a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 1958 .

In 1973, plans began to build a nuclear power plant in Remerschen. In November 1973, RWE informed the German federal government that an agreement had been reached with the Luxembourg government to build a nuclear power plant on Luxembourg territory.

On January 30, 1974, the Societe Luxembourgeoise d'Energie Nucleaire SA (SENU) was founded as a public limited company under Luxembourg law for the planning, construction and operation of this nuclear power plant. On June 17, 1973, a letter of intent was signed with the consortium : Brown, Boveri and Cie. AG (BBC), Babcock - Brown Boveri Reaktor GmbH (BBR) and Hochtief AG .

As early as 1973, resistance against the planned Remerschen nuclear power plant began to form in civil society . From the beginning of the planning to the mid-1990s, there were also considerable concerns and resistance against the Cattenom nuclear power plant in the French, Luxembourg, German and especially in the Saarland region, which was boosted by the successful approach, awareness-raising and the prevention of the Remersian nuclear power plant. In January 1976 the Remerschen council opposed the construction of the power plant. On December 11, 1977, the socialist party LSAP voted with a narrow majority for a moratorium and in December 1978 the Luxembourg government did not get a majority in parliament for the construction of the nuclear power plant. The project was finally abandoned in 1979.

Location

The Remerschen location was suggested because of its location in the border triangle France-Luxembourg-Germany and because of the low population density.

Today there is a nature reserve and local recreation area in the district of Remerschen in the municipality of Schengen and the " Biodiversum - Camille Gira " (formerly: Center Nature et Forêt Biodiversum ).

Technical specifications

The Remerschen nuclear power plant was to be largely identical to the Mülheim-Kärlich nuclear power plant, which was under construction at the time (see technical data of the Mülheim-Kärlich nuclear power plant, which has now been closed ).
