Kerry Strayer

Kerry Alan Strayer (born December 22, 1956 in Fairbury , Nebraska , † August 1, 2013 in Kansas City , Missouri ) was an American baritone saxophonist (also flute ), composer , arranger and bandleader of mainstream jazz , who played in the music scene of Kansas City , Missouri was active.

Strayer played the flute when he was ten. At the age of 16 the head of the school band convinced him to play the baritone saxophone. After listening to the Gerry Mulligan / Paul Desmond album Two of a Mind , he became interested in jazz. After attending college in Nebraska, he studied at the Conservatory of the University of Missouri – Kansas City . He then worked in Kansas City, played in local bands and went on tour with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra ( Ghost Band ). In 1991 he founded the New Kansas City 7 septet , for which he made all arrangementswrote. His main occupation was teaching at Johnson Community College. In 1998 his debut album was released, a tribute to Gerry Mulligan (Jeru Blue) on Palmetto (with Randy Brecker, among others ). The next album Speak Low worked Frank Mantooth as a guest musician.

Strayer was also a founding member of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra , a big band created in 2003 ; In 2010 he became their artistic director and conductor. Strayer was involved in seven recording sessions from 1984 to 2005.
