Keystone is a town in the Black Hills in Pennington County in the US state of South Dakota . In 2010 the place had 337 inhabitants. Keystone began as a mining settlement in 1883, but is now a tourist destination, largely because of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial just outside the city limits . Sights include the Black Hills Central Railroad , built in 1900 to mine gold , which is now used by tourist trains with well-maintained steam locomotives .

Carrie Ingalls (sister of the author of Little House on the Prairie , Laura Ingalls Wilder ) spent much of her adult life in Keystone and lived with her husband and his children here. Another sister, Mary Ingalls , also lived with them for a while and died in Keystone in 1928.

Part of the comedy film North was shot here in 1984.
