The license plates of Ecuador have black lettering on a white background and correspond in terms of their size to the US American plate type. The license plates consist of three letters, a short dividing line and three to four digits. The first letter indicates the province in which the vehicle was registered. Furthermore, the second letter is used in connection with the background color of the sign to determine the type of vehicle more precisely. Centered above the inscription is the country name in capital letters.
Older license plates only showed a letter and a consecutive number as well as the name of the province at the bottom of the shield.
