Khalilabad ( Hindi : खलीलाबाद , Urdu : خلیل آباد Kh alīlābād [ xʌliːlaːbaːd̪ ]) is a city in theIndianstate ofUttar Pradeshwith around 48,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

The city is located in the northeast of the state 35 kilometers west of Gorakhpur and 35 kilometers west of Basti . Khalilabad is the administrative seat of the Sant Kabir Nagar district .

Khalilabad bears its name (cf. -abad ) after Khalil-ur-Rahman , who was appointed governor of Gorakhpur by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1680 .

The national highway NH 28 runs through Khalilabad from Lucknow to Barauni . Khalilabad is connected to the rail network via the railway line from Lucknow to Gorakhpur.
