location

The Kherua Mosque is located near the village of Khandakartola in Sherpur- Upazila in the Bogra district in the Rajshahi Division in northwest Bangladesh . The next larger cities are Sherpur (approx. 14 km north) and Bogra (approx. 35 km north). history

The builder of the mosque, which was completed in 1582, was Mirza Murad Khan Qaqshal , a member of the Qaqsal tribe from Afghanistan who - together with the regional powers of the Sultanate of Bengal , which existed from 1352 to 1576 and annexed by the Mughals - made it their mission had to drive the Mughals out of there, but it did not succeed.

architecture

Kherua mosque

The mosque building, supported by approx. 1.80 m thick brick walls (external dimensions approx. 17.34 × 7.50 m; internal dimensions approx. 13.72 × 3.80 m) consists only of a three-part hall covered by non-bulged domes; During Friday prayers , the soldiers gathered in the open space in front of it. The roof of the mosque is slightly drawn down in the corners, which corresponds to the roof shape common in Bengal . In the corners of the building, four tower stumps protrude over the side lines, on which the planned, but ultimately not executed, minarets should rest. The three front and two side portals are embedded in the surrounding masonry and surrounded by rectangular alfiz frames; additional window windows loosen up the facade design. The rear wall ( qibla ) faces west ( Mecca ); In it there are three niches ( mihrabs ) that do not appear to the outside , but no window openings.
