history

View from the Wuhle to the Kienberg

Originally the Kienberg was a hill formed during the Ice Age, which according to the survey plans was called Kiehnberg in 1822 and Langer Kienberg in 1838 .

When measurements were taken in 1966, the elevation was 58.3  m high and was located in the middle of sewage fields. In the following years, rubble and rubble were dumped on the hill . In addition, the excavated soil from the large Marzahn settlement was heaped up at this location. In 1981 the elevation reached a height of 102.2  m. During this time it was called Marzahner Kippe , Müllkippe or Hellersdorfer Berg .

In the mid-1970s, plans were considered to build a local recreation area around the Kienberg with a gondola pond and rowing boat rental. But these plans were never realized. In 1987 the Berlin Garden Show opened to the north of the Kienberg. Today the gardens of the world are located on this site . Most of the elevation remained untouched by the horticultural show and at the eastern foot, the old Wuhle dammed up wet biotopes , which act as breeding grounds for many rare or endangered bird species.

Plans by Grün Berlin Park und Garten GmbH at the end of the 1990s to integrate the Kienberg into the recreation park failed due to popular protest. With the help of EU funds, the ascent path as part of the Wuhle hiking trail was rebuilt and benches and a viewing platform were set up on the plateau.

In 2005 a circular path was laid out around the Kienberg, which branches off a little way west of the toboggan run to the summit. From the open space on the summit, you can partially overlook the city district with the housing developments through the trees.

The International Garden Exhibition 2017 (IGA 2017), which was originally planned for Tempelhofer Feld , took place on the survey and in the Gardens of the World .

The lift has 64 cabins, six of which have a glass floor. The journey time is five minutes.
