Location and protection purposes

The largest part of the 4.7 hectare protected area consists of a groundwater lake in the area of the Moselle floodplains , in which gravel was mined until the 1980s . As part of a school project, a population of freshwater jellyfish, the only jellyfish species in Central European inland areas, was discovered in the pit initially intended for backfilling or as a swimming lake. This was the reason to designate the water and its peripheral areas as a nature reserve.

Since then, the protective purpose has been the preservation, securing and stabilization of near-natural stagnant water in the area of the former Moselle floodplains and including the extensively used orchards to maintain communities of rare and threatened animal species, in particular water birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects and cnidarians (e . Freshwater Meduse).

Today the nature reserve has a networking function as a stepping stone biotope, especially for migrating birds, which are also attracted by the abundance of insects: In addition to many butterflies, wasps and bees, eleven dragonfly species have been identified.

use

The nature reserve is usually not accessible. It consists of dense shrubbery at the edge and is fenced in with a chain-link fence over 2 m high . The front door is secured with a steel chain and a padlock.
