The Gillenbachtal is a nature reserve in the area of the city of Trier and the district of Trier-Saarburg . It is located in the Trier district of Trier-West / Pallien as well as in Trierweiler - Sirzenich (district of Trier-Saarburg) and includes the headwaters and the valley of the Gillenbach down to the Stadtwaldhotel, as well as the north-facing slope up to the federal highway 51 . Due to the extensive destruction of the headwaters of the Gillenbach by road and motorway construction, it only carries water after heavy rain.

history

The nature reserve was designated in 1995.

Location and protection purposes

Much of the reserve has the character of a forest canyon with steep slopes, fallen trees and washed-out rocks. The protection purpose is the preservation of a species-rich mixed deciduous forest with a high proportion of old and dead wood, of orchids with historical and local fruit varieties, of nutrient-poor smooth oat meadows , semi-dry grass fragments, an occurrence of the Kalk-Kleinseggenriedes, the locations of various orchids and secondary limestone rock faces .

The orchid area is located on a damp slope and thus differs fundamentally from the orchid meadows that are more typical for the region on dry limestone grassland . In order not to cause damage from footprints in the damp area, maintenance measures can only be carried out in winter when the ground is frozen and permafrost.

The climate in the Gillenbachtal is significantly cooler than that in the surrounding area.

Use as a recreational area

Today's nature reserve was formerly a recreational area for the former old people's home on the site of today's Stadtwaldhotel. In order to create opportunities for walking, paths and bridges were created in the area of today's nature reserve, but these are largely dilapidated.
