The Wiltinger Saarbogen is a 167 hectare nature reserve on the Lower Saar between the municipalities of Schoden and Hamm in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is part of the FFH area 6405-303 - Serriger Bachtal and Leuk and Saar and the only largely natural section of the Lower Saar. The area extends over parts of the districts of Wiltingen , Kanzem , Schoden and Filzen . It includes in particular the following types of biotope : flowing and still water zones, aquatic plant communities, spring horizons , near-natural river bank areas with tall perennials and riverside willow bushes, floodplain forest , gravel and sand banks, reed beds and large sedge areas as well as moist tall perennial corridors . The approximately 8 km long section of the river in the Wiltinger Saarbogen did not undergo any noteworthy change when the Saar was expanded in the 1980s. The Kanzem lock and its lock canal were built in a former course of the Saar to the west for large-scale shipping. An ecologically sufficient flow in the Wiltinger Saarbogen is legally and technically guaranteed.
