The nature reserve Kahlenberg am Sievenicherhof is a nature reserve , the greater part of which is in the north of the Trier district and the much smaller part in the municipal area of Trierweiler near the federal highway 51 and the industrial area of Trierweiler- Sirzenich opposite the road . The area is first and foremost an orchid reserve , is fenced in and may not be entered without special permission. A significant part of the orchid meadows is clearly visible from outside the fence. In some areas these also grow outside the boundary fence.

history

Today's protected area can hardly be recognized as a mountain. The reason for this is the lime mining in the second half of the 19th century. The area was then used as pasture and, after the Second World War, as a training and blasting area for the French army . From this time there are peaks, valleys, steep slopes and hollows, partially overgrown paths and small limestone fragments in the landscape .

The area was declared a protected area in 1990. It was maintained for many years by volunteer Naturschutzbund Deutschland activists. Maintenance is currently being carried out by a professional company. Care is necessary because the area is no longer grazed and without care the open spaces would quickly become overgrown and there would be no more habitat for the orchids.

Location and protection purposes

Due to its dryness, the soil is naturally poor in nutrients. It therefore offers particularly favorable conditions for plants that have adapted to these barren conditions and would be overgrown by other plants in a more nutrient-rich environment.

The primary purpose of protection is therefore the maintenance of semi- arid grassland rich in orchids and arid grassland with adjacent bush formations and mixed forest areas. These offer endangered animal and plant species and their communities a suitable habitat.

Flora and fauna

Among the rare plants that grow in the area are the German gentian , the fringed gentian, the common pasque flower , the branchy grass lilies , as well as the orchid species male orchid and large two-leaf orchid . Among other things , the red-backed shrike , the silver-green bluing and the smooth snake have been detected on animals .
