Kilchoman is a small village on the Scottish island of Islay and is therefore in the Council Area Argyll and Bute . It is isolated on the west coast of the island, north of the Rhinns of Islay peninsula , about six kilometers northwest of Port Charlotte and ten kilometers west-northwest of Bowmore , the island's capital.

history

Various sacred buildings have been located at this location since early Christian times. In the 14th century, the main church of the entire Rhinns of Islay peninsula was in Kilchoman. This building was deemed too unsafe in 1824, which is why it was decided to build the new Kilchoman Church . Construction began in 1825 and completed in 1827. In the course of the new building, the existing cemetery was also expanded. In 1977 the last service was held at Kilchoman Church. A military cemetery has been set up on the new section of the associated cemetery. The victims of the Otranto , which sank in Machir Bay , were buried there in 1918 . Kilchoman is the eponymous place of the Parish Kilchoman .

Kilchoman is now only a few inhabited houses. In 1841, 229 people were counted in Kilchoman, compared to 252 in 1851. Sights include the ruins of Kilchoman Parish Church, Kilchoman Cross and Kilchoman House . The Kilchoman whiskey distillery is nearby.
