Kilcoy Castle is a tower house near Muir of Ord on the Black Isle peninsula in the Scottish county of Ross-shire (now part of the Highland administrative division ). The Z-shaped building dates from before 1618, possibly even from 1580 (then contemporary with Dalcross Castle ).
history
The castle was built by the Stewart family as early as 1580 and Alexander Mackenzie , third son of Colin Cam Mackenzie of Kintail , had it completed around 1618. Having married the widow of Sir James Stewart of Kilcoy on August 15, 1611, he received a charter for the lands of Kilcoy of July 18, 1616 and another charter for the Baronate of Kilcoy of January 29, 1618. The property was in the male line of the Mackenzies inherited from Kilcoy to the death of Sir Evan Mackenzie, 2nd Baronet , 1883. Then inherited his eldest daughter, who married a Colonel Burton .
The Tower House fell into disrepair in the late 18th and 19th centuries. 1891 was designed by architects Ross and McBeth from Inverness restored, which also grew a four-story wing north.

The castle is a tower house with a Z-shaped floor plan. It has four floors and two round towers on opposite corners. It has a stepped gable . The roof is covered with slate and has dormers , probably from the end of the 17th century. There are many loopholes .

The castle was recently sold. Their gardens are regularly open to the public under the Scotland's Gardens program. Historic Scotland has listed the Tower House as a Category A Historic Building.
