Dalcross Castle is a restored tower house about 2.5 km southwest of the village of Croy and about 11 km northeast of Inverness in the Scottish administrative division Highland . The hilltop castle from the 17th century stands on the ridge of a range of hills.

history

The property belonged to the Fraser of Lovat clan and the 8th  Lord Lovat had a castle built here in 1620, but the property soon fell to the Mackintosh clan . Before the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the Hanoverian troops gathered here. The Tower House was abandoned and fell into disrepair, but was restored in the 19th century for descendants of the Lairds of the Mackintosh family. The restoration work was probably carried out by W. L. Carruthers in 1896.

description

Although Dalcross Castle is named as the Tower House with an L-shaped floor plan, it would be better described as having two wings connected at the corners. One of the wings has five floors and an attic, while the other has three floors. The two buildings are connected by a tower with a square floor plan with a crowd watchtower and an attached guard room with gables. This creates two interior angles. After its completion, the Tower House was expanded, e.g. B. by an extension to the north gable in the 18th century.

There are many loopholes in the walls and many windows still have their iron bars. At the foot of the square stair tower is the entrance from the courtyard, which leads to the ground floor with a vaulted ceiling . On the ground floor there is a storage cellar, a kitchen with a large, arched stove and a wine cellar with a small staircase to the beautiful knight's hall on the 1st floor, which can also be reached via the wide main staircase. Consisting of stone -made fireplace mantel is surrounded by a carved coat of arms and the motto "Je Trouve Bien". The bedrooms on the upper floors can be reached via a small, straight staircase. A massive chimney head towers over the east wall of the northern wing of the building.

The building is made of red sandstone , which is clad with machined and polished stone . The entrance has door reveals rolled inwards and a staggered roof . The sign above the door shows the year of construction 1720.

Some windows, including dormers, were installed in 1896.

The gardens of the house are surrounded by a vaulted wall made of red sandstone rubble .

Dalcross Castle is classified as a Category A Historic Building.
