Parish

Due to its affiliation to the imperial city of Heilbronn, Böckingen has been almost entirely Protestant for centuries since the Reformation. Even when Böckingen and Heilbronn came to Württemberg in 1803 , most of the then around 1000 residents were still Protestant. Around a century later, the population had grown to 8,000. In the meantime there were around 600 Catholics among the inhabitants, who had to go to church services in Heilbronn by then, which is why the establishment of an independent pastoral care district was considered around 1900. For the construction of a new Catholic church, the Böckingen community bought a plot of land surrounded by gardens and vineyards on the still unpaved Weststrasse (today Ludwigsburger Strasse) for 9,400 marks. During the construction of the Kilian's Church on December 31, 1901, the pastoral care district of Böckingen was founded; the places Frankenbach , Klingenberg and Nordheim with Nordhausen were subordinate to him as branch locations . In 1910 the pastoral care district was raised to an independent parish .

In addition to Kilian's Church, a denominational school was built on Weststrasse, and the Catholic rectory was added in 1906 . The school was taken over by the secular community in 1905 and moved to the newly built Alleenschule (today: Grünewaldschule) in 1913 , so that after 1914 the Sisters of Mercy of the Caritas Association and a youth home were housed in the schoolhouse. In 1948 a new parish hall was completed on the site of the Catholic school house.

In 1953, a branch church was built in Nordheim with the church of Sankt Maria, and in 1954 another branch was added in the Kreuzgrund district of Böckingen with the Holy Cross Church . From 1972 a third branch church was built, the St. Johannes Church in Frankenbach. On November 1, 1980, the previous branches in Kreuzgrund and Frankenbach were raised to their own parish.

Construction history of the church building

On August 22, 1901 the foundation stone was laid for Kilian's Church, which was built according to plans by Richard Raisch in the neo-Romanesque style. The construction was completed in 1902, the total cost was 80,000 marks. The church was consecrated to Saint Kilian on October 14, 1902 .

The church originally had two bronze bells, of which the larger "Kilians bell" had to be handed in to be melted down in 1917. In 1919 the peal was replaced by two steel bells, which were replaced by four new bronze bells in 1927. The church was renovated for the first time in 1930, and the interior of the church was repainted by the painter Schenk from Schwäbisch Gmünd.

During the air raids on Heilbronn in World War II, all the windows of the church were destroyed and the roof covered. The damaged roof was repaired in the winter of 1944/45, in the course of the reconstruction in 1946 a 2.50 meter high statue of the church patron Kilian by Karl Eisele was placed above the portal of the church .

Another renovation of the church took place from August 1964 to May 1965. The paintings from 1930 were whitewashed again and an additional window was broken into the chancel. By setting up new, continuous rows of benches, the previous central aisle was no longer required. The sacristy was also added.

description

The church is 38 meters long and stands on a hill in an east-west direction. The church was built as a basilica with three naves , the main nave being higher than the two flanking aisles. The choir itself has an apse that describes half a circle. The tower is 39 meters high and stands in the northwest corner.

A late Gothic Madonna, a figure of Christ and an oil painting depicting Saint Joseph date from the Baroque period. Otto Habel and Josef de Ponte created the colored windows in the 20th century. Margot Eberle created the ambo and font. A new organ for the church was built in 2012 by Richard Rensch in Lauffen.
