Killing Floor 2 is a computer game developed by Tripwire Interactive . It is the successor to Killing Floor from 2009. It has been available as an early access title on Steam since April 2015. It was released for Windows and PlayStation 4 in November 2016 and for Xbox One in August 2017 .

Gameplay

Killing Floor 2 is a first-person shooter that can be played in single player and multiplayer mode with up to 6 players. The game is based on the events of Killing Floor , where Europe was overrun by zeds ( zombie-like creatures ) created by the biotechnology company Horzine . On Killing Floor 2 , which takes place a month after the first part, the outbreak has spread beyond Europe's borders.

The principle of the game is that players battle waves of zeds. After completing each wave, as well as the number of players, the number and variety of Zeds increases. The final wave is a boss fight. The type of boss is determined randomly at the start of the last wave, with each boss requiring a different strategy. The players are equipped with close-range and long-range weapons, a vaccination pistol for healing and a hand welder to barricade doors. Random weapons, ammunition, and armor can be found on the map, with only a limited amount of equipment that can be carried.

By defeating Zeds the player receives money and experience points . Certain forms of eliminating the zeds, such as headshots, put the game into so-called "zed time", with all game actions being slowed down for a few seconds. The player can lose life points through the various Zeds, which can be restored by using their own vaccination pistol or by using their own vaccination pistol on the wounded player, as well as through various other healing items. As soon as the player has no more life points, he dies and is only reborn at the end of the current wave. As soon as all players are dead at the same time, the mission is considered to have failed. Players receive bonus money for surviving a wave, which can be spent in a shop between waves to buy armor, ammunition and weapons. In a game, the degree of difficulty and the number of waves before the boss fight can be set.

The player can choose between ten different classes, for example medic, commando or sniper, which have different skills. These abilities are, for example, improved healing of other players, increased damage with certain types of weapons or the faster welding of doors. For class-relevant actions, for example for the paramedic to heal players, the player gains experience points for this class. The experience points gained remain even after missions. If a player heals another player, he will receive experience points for his medic class, even if he is currently playing another class. Most experience points are earned through the class-specific weapons, for example shotguns for the "Support" class. With each level reached, the class bonuses improve, for example 3% welding speed per level for "support". Every five levels the player can choose one of two different abilities, for example faster reloading or increased magazine capacity with the command.

A patch in April 2016 added another game mode in which two teams play against each other. One team controls the Zeds, while the other team has to defeat the Zeds. Players who control the Zeds can use their skills, for example holding a player in the "clot".

development

Killing Floor 2 was developed by Tripwire Interactive with the help of a heavily modified Unreal Engine 3. The developers considered using the Unreal Engine 4 , but decided against it because they did not want to give up the progress made in development and wanted to make the game playable on low-end computers.

Tripwire Interactive used motion capture technology to create the animations of zeds and guns from first person and third person perspective.

The game was released on November 18, 2016 for Windows and PlayStation 4 .

music

The soundtrack for Killing Floor 2 was released on April 21, 2015 by Solid State Records . It contains original compositions by zYnthetic as well as metal pieces by various artists.

Jørn Tillnes from Soundtrack Geek gave the soundtrack a 9/10 rating.

reception

According to Metacritic , Killing Floor 2 received mostly positive reviews (PC: 75%, PS4: 75%). As with the predecessor Killing Floor , there was negative feedback for the lack of a plot, the low number of cards and the repetitive gameplay.
