Kim Jong-yang ( Korean 김종양 ; born October 30, 1961 ) is a South Korean police officer. In November 2018 he was elected President of Interpol .

career

Kim Jong-yang became head of the Busan Criminal Police Unit, South Korea , in 1992 . He rose rapidly in the South Korean police hierarchy in the years that followed and in 2004 became police chief of Seongbuk-gu in Seoul. In 2005, he was Assistant Secretary at the Information and Police Oversight Bureau of the President of South Korea. After further career stages, he became head of the South Korean Interpol section and general director of the South Korean national police authority KNPA in 2011. From 2012 to 2015 he was the South Korean delegate to the Executive Committee of Interpol. In 2015 he was elected Vice President of Interpol.

After the incumbent Interpol President Meng Hongwei, who comes from the People's Republic of China, suddenly disappeared during a trip to China and reappeared a few days later and declared his resignation under obscure circumstances on October 7, 2018, Kim took over the office of President of Interpol.

At the annual meeting of the delegates of the 194 member states of Interpol in Dubai from 18 to 21 November 2018, Kim was elected President of Interpol. The choice came as a surprise because Alexander Prokoptschuk from Russia had long been considered the favorite to succeed Meng. Prokoptschuk, who had worked in the Russian Interior Ministry for a long time , was criticized because he was accused of using Interpol to observe and harass the opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin . In the vote, Kim received 101 votes against 61 for Prokopchuk. Prokoptschuk received one of the three vice-presidential posts. There were angry reactions in Russia. For example, commentators on the state television broadcaster Rossiya 1 accused the West of instigating “a veritable information war” against Russia.
