Serdal Çelebi

Serdal Çelebi (* May 1984 ) is a German-Turkish blind soccer player who is active for FC St. Pauli in the blind soccer Bundesliga . Çelebi gained greater fame when he became the first blind footballer to score the goal of the month in August 2018 .

Life

Çelebi grew up in the small town of Çakan in the Kurdish regions in eastern Turkey . When he was a child, his father emigrated to Hamburg . In 1995 Çelebi's family was displaced to nearby Karakoçan in the conflict between the Republic of Turkey and the PKK . By the age of eight, Çelebi's vision problems became increasingly severe. After an initial operation, his father brought him to Hamburg to give him better treatment. However, due to a retinal detachment , Çelebi went blind at the age of 13. He later completed an apprenticeship as a brush binder in Hamburg . Çelebi then completed an apprenticeship as a masseur and medical lifeguard as well as a physiotherapist in Nuremberg and returned to Hamburg, where he has been working as a physiotherapist since 2008. In 2009 he started at FC St. Pauli with the blind football and became 2017 German master. From 2014 Çelebi played in the German national team, with which he took part in the World Cup in Japan that same year . In 2015 Çelebi resigned from the national team for personal reasons.

On August 25, 2018, Çelebi scored the only goal of his team in the 1: 2 defeat in the final of the German blind football championship against MTV Stuttgart . He had dribbled forward over the right wing and shot the ball with his left foot in the left corner. His goal was nominated for Goal of the Month as the first goal of a blind soccer player , which generated a lot of media coverage. With 36 percent of the vote, his goal was ahead of those of Marvin Plattenhardt ( Hertha BSC , 35 percent), Mike Frantz ( SC Freiburg , 13 percent), Kai Druschky ( BSG Chemie Leipzig , nine percent) and Jonas Meffert ( Holstein Kiel , seven percent ) elected Goal of the Month for August. Before and after the final election, Çelebi was a guest in various television formats , such as stern TV . In November 2018 he drew the round of 16 of the DFB Cup 2018/19 . In the vote for Goal of the Year , his goal was voted third.
